Kiwano, also known as African horned cucumber or jelly melon, is an exotic climbing plant from the Cucurbitaceae family. Native to Africa, it is widely appreciated for its unique appearance and refreshing taste.
  • Fruit: Oval-shaped, about 10–15 cm long, with a bright orange-yellow spiky rind.
  • Flesh: Jelly-like, bright green, and juicy with a slightly tart yet sweet flavor, reminiscent of cucumber, banana, and lime.
  • Taste: Refreshing and tropical, suitable for both sweet and savory dishes.
  1. Seed Sowing:
    • Sow seeds indoors in late April or May at a temperature of at least 20–25°C (68–77°F).
    • Germination takes 1–2 weeks.
  2. Planting:
    • Transplant seedlings outdoors after the risk of frost has passed and soil temperatures are above 18°C (64°F).
    • Ideal for greenhouses or sunny, sheltered spots in open fields.
  3. Growing Conditions:
    • Prefers fertile, well-drained soil and warm temperatures.
    • As a climbing plant, it requires trellising for optimal growth.
  4. Care:
    • Water regularly but avoid excessive moisture.
    • Feed weekly with a potassium- and nitrogen-rich fertilizer.
  5. Harvesting:
    • Fruits ripen within 3–4 months of sowing.
    • Harvest when the rind turns orange and the fruit is firm but slightly yielding to pressure.

Kiwano is a unique and visually striking fruit that adds an exotic touch to various dishes!
