'Jõgeva 3' is an onion variety bred in Estonia by Julius Aamisepp and Valve Jaagus at the Jõgeva Plant Breeding Institute. It was officially registered in 1963.

Characteristics:

  • Type: Mid-season, multi-bulb variety belonging to the pungent onion group.
  • Shape & Size: Flattened round bulbs weighing 40–70 grams.
  • Color: The outer scales range from pinkish-yellow to pinkish-brown or yellow.
  • Storage: Very good shelf life, suitable for long-term storage.
  • Disease resistance: Resistant to onion downy mildew.

Cultivation:

  • Onion seeds are sown outdoors in early spring.
  • By autumn, small bulb sets (top onions) develop, which are stored at room temperature to prevent flowering the following year.
  • In spring, the sets are planted early to promote strong root development.
  • Flower stalks should be removed to prevent yield reduction.
  • The crop is harvested when the leaves turn yellow, and the bulbs are dried in a shaded area.

Uses:

  • 'Jõgeva 3' is suitable for fresh consumption and pickling.
  • Due to its excellent storage qualities, it is ideal for long-term use.
