Tagetes lucida, also known as Winter Estragon, is an aromatic and multi-purpose herb used for culinary and medicinal purposes. Its flavor resembles French tarragon, but with a sweeter, slightly anise-like note. The plant has glossy, narrow green leaves and bright golden-yellow flowers, which attract pollinators.

Native to Central and South America, it has been traditionally used in cooking, teas, and herbal medicine. It is a low-maintenance, resilient, and versatile herb that thrives both in garden beds and containers.

Growing Guide

1. Sowing and Planting:

  • Seeds should be sown in early spring, either indoors for transplanting or directly outdoors after the risk of frost has passed.

  • Germination takes 7–14 days at an optimal temperature of 18–22°C (64–72°F).

  • Space plants 30 cm (12 inches) apart, as they form a compact, bushy growth.

2. Growing Conditions:

  • Prefers a sunny location.

  • Requires light, well-drained, moderately fertile soil.

  • Drought-tolerant once established, making it low-maintenance.

3. Watering and Care:

  • Needs moderate watering, avoiding excess moisture.

  • Cutting back flowered stems encourages new growth.

  • Resistant to pests and attracts beneficial insects.

4. Harvesting and Uses:

  • Leaves and flowers can be harvested throughout the growing season and used fresh or dried.

  • Excellent for teas, soups, sauces, fish, and meat dishes.

  • Traditionally used in herbal medicine for digestion and relaxation.

5. Overwintering:

  • In warmer climates, it is a perennial, but in colder regions, it is typically grown as an annual or overwintered in a greenhouse/pot.

Tagetes lucida is an excellent tarragon substitute, offering an easy-to-grow and flavorful alternative for any herb garden!
