Leaf vegetable. Widely grown in Europe prior to the introduction of spinach. Tasty and flavoursome. Leaves can be continually harvested. Due to the red leaves, very decorative, too.

It produces many triangular, or arrow shaped red/purple leaves on tall stems. The plants can grow to about 90 cm tall. Orach has a mild chard-like flavor but tastes saltier than most greens as the minerals from the soil are stored in the plant's leaves. Orach leaves are used cold or cooked, and can be used like spinach or chard, or stuffed like cabbage leaves.

Orach is a good source of iron, copper and zinc. Orach is high in iron and iron is required for the formation of red blood cells and transportation of oxygen to different parts of the body. Orach can help prevent iron deficiency anemia.
