‘Rokero’ is a stunning and flavorful variety of purple Brussels sprouts, combining ornamental beauty with culinary versatility. Its vibrant color and sweet, nutty taste make it a favorite for both gardeners and chefs. Demeter biodynamic seeds.

Description:

  • Leaves and Sprouts: Compact, small purple rosettes that deepen in color in cool weather.
  • Height: The plant grows to approximately 70–100 cm (28–40 inches).
  • Flavor: Sweet and nutty, with enhanced flavor after exposure to frost.
  • Cold Tolerance: Performs well in colder climates, making it ideal for northern regions.

Growing Conditions:

  1. Light: Requires full sun, at least 6–8 hours daily.
  2. Soil:
    • Prefers nutrient-rich, well-drained soil.
    • Optimal pH: 6.0–7.0.
  3. Sowing and Planting:
    • Indoor sowing: Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last spring frost.
    • Transplanting outdoors: Plant seedlings when they are 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) tall and after the danger of frost has passed.
    • Spacing: 60 cm (24 inches) between plants, 75 cm (30 inches) between rows.
  4. Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but avoid overwatering.
  5. Fertilizing:
    • Apply nitrogen-rich fertilizer during early growth stages.
    • Use potassium-rich fertilizer in the fall to improve cold resistance.
  6. Care:
    • Remove lower leaves to encourage sprout development.
    • Protect plants from pests such as cabbage worms using natural repellents or netting.

Harvesting:

  • Begin harvesting the sprouts from the bottom upwards when they are 2–4 cm (1–1.5 inches) in diameter.
  • Flavor and color improve significantly after exposure to the first frosts, resulting in sweeter sprouts.
