The Charentais melon is a classic French cantaloupe (Cucumis melo var. cantalupensis), prized for its sweet flavor and fragrant orange flesh. The fruits are round, medium-sized (1–1.5 kg), with a thin, pale green to cream-colored rind, often marked with dark green stripesThe flesh is bright orange, juicy, and highly aromatic, with a tropical and floral scent.
This melon is fast-growing and thrives in warm conditions, making it ideal for greenhouse cultivation or a sunny, sheltered spot in the open field.
- Seed Sowing: Start seeds indoors in April or sow directly outdoors in May when soil temperatures reach at least 18°C (64°F).
- Seedling Care: Germination requires warmth (22–25°C / 72–77°F). Transplant seedlings when they have 2–4 true leaves.
- Growing Conditions: Prefers fertile, well-draining soil and a sunny, warm location.
- Watering: Requires consistent watering but avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
- Pollination: Flowers are self-pollinating but benefit from manual pollination for better fruit set.
- Harvesting: Fruits mature 75–90 days after sowing. Ripe melons emit a strong aroma and yield slightly to pressure near the stem.
