Delicata squash is a small winter squash known for its sweet flavor and delicate flesh. Its skin is creamy yellow with dark green stripes and is thin enough to eat when cooked. The flesh has a chestnut-like taste and a smooth texture, making it a favorite for baking, soups, stuffing, or simply roasting in the oven.

Delicata squash is often called "Sweet Potato Squash" because its flesh is sweet and has a flavor similar to that of a sweet potato. Additionally, its texture is smooth and creamy, resembling baked sweet potato. Unlike many other winter squashes, Delicata has a thin and tender skin, making it unnecessary to peel—just like sweet potatoes, which can also be eaten with the skin on.

This nickname mainly refers to its taste and texture rather than any botanical relationship, as sweet potatoes belong to an entirely different plant family.

Growing Guide:
Delicata squash thrives in warm, sunny locations with well-draining, nutrient-rich soil. Seeds should be sown directly outdoors after the last frost when the soil temperature reaches at least 15°C. For an earlier harvest, seeds can be started indoors 3–4 weeks before transplanting.

Plants should be spaced approximately 90 cm apart to allow room for growth. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry periods. To ensure healthy growth, enrich the soil with compost or organic fertilizer.

The squash is ready for harvest 90–100 days after planting. When harvesting, cut the fruit with a portion of the stem attached for better storage. Delicata squash can be stored in a cool, dry place for several months.
