Butternut Waltham is a popular heirloom variety of winter squash, known for its sweet, nutty flavor and smooth, tan-colored skin. The elongated pear-shaped fruits typically weigh between 1–2 kg (2–4 lbs) and have deep orange, fine-textured flesh that becomes even sweeter after curing. This variety is highly productive and stores well for months, making it a favorite among home gardeners and farmers alike.

Growing Guide

1. Sowing:

  • Start seeds indoors 3–4 weeks before the last frost if you have a short growing season.

  • Direct sow seeds outdoors when the soil temperature reaches 18–21°C (65–70°F).

  • Plant seeds 2.5 cm (1 inch) deep in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil.

2. Spacing and Sunlight:

  • Space plants 90–120 cm (3–4 feet) apart to allow for vigorous vine growth.

  • Provide full sun exposure for at least 6–8 hours per day.

3. Watering and Care:

  • Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

  • Use mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

  • Apply a balanced fertilizer during early growth and switch to low-nitrogen, high-phosphorus fertilizer once flowering begins.

4. Pollination:

  • Butternut squash relies on bees and other pollinators. If fruit set is low, hand-pollinate flowers using a small brush.

5. Harvesting:

  • Squash is ready for harvest about 85–100 days after sowing when the skin turns a uniform tan color and resists puncturing with a fingernail.

  • Cut the stem 5 cm (2 inches) above the fruit to extend storage life.

6. Storage:

  • Cure the squash in a warm, dry area for 10–14 days to harden the skin and improve flavor.

  • Store in a cool, dark place where it can last for 3–6 months.

This versatile squash is excellent for roasting, soups, and purees, making it a staple in both home and commercial kitchens.
