PUMPKIN - MUSCAT DE PROVENCE, organic seeds
Cucurbita moscha
Muscat de Provence is a classic French heirloom pumpkin, highly valued for its exceptional flavor and decorative appearance. The fruits are large, weighing 3–10 kg, with deeply ribbed skin that changes from green to a rich orange as it ripens. The deep orange flesh is sweet, aromatic, and dense, making it perfect for soups, roasting, baking, and purées.1. Sowing:
As a warm-season plant, seeds should only be sown when the soil temperature reaches at least 15°C (59°F).
For an earlier harvest, seeds can be started indoors 3–4 weeks before transplanting.
Direct sowing outdoors is done after the risk of frost has passed, typically in late May or early June.
Sow seeds 2–3 cm (1 inch) deep, with 1.5–2 meters (5–6.5 feet) between plants, as they require plenty of space to grow.
2. Growing Conditions:
Requires a sunny and sheltered location.
Prefers fertile, well-drained, and humus-rich soil.
Adding compost or well-rotted manure before planting ensures optimal growth.
3. Watering and Care:
Needs regular watering, especially during flowering and fruit development.
Avoid watering the leaves to prevent fungal diseases.
Mulching helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
4. Pollination:
Pumpkins rely on bees and other pollinators.
If pollination is insufficient, hand pollination can be done by transferring pollen from the male to the female flowers.
5. Harvesting:
The pumpkin is ready when the skin is fully orange and firm, and the stem starts to dry.
It matures 110–120 days after sowing.
Harvest with a short piece of the stem attached to improve storage life.
6. Storage and Use:
Cure the pumpkins in a warm, dry place for 1–2 weeks to harden the skin and enhance flavor.
Store in a cool, well-ventilated area, where they can last for several months.
Ideal for soups, roasting, baking, and desserts.
Muscat de Provence is a high-yielding, flavorful, and versatile pumpkin variety, loved by home gardeners and market growers alike.
